Community Education Series

We offer free trainings twice per month by our physicians focusing on various topics. They typically occur the second and fourth Thursday of the month either at 8am or 12pm. CEUs are provided.

In addition to on-site trainings, our staff of physicians and clinicians are able to provide trainings/workshops at your agency, free of charge, as needed. Please contact the Business Development Department for current and upcoming trainings.

Self Injury and the Use of Expressive Therapy in Treatment

Presenter: Ashley Samson, LCPC, ATR
Ashley is a licensed clinical professional counselor and registered art therapist. She earned a BS in art therapy and studio arts as well as a psychology minor from Edgewood College in 2004 and gained a Master of Art in Art Therapy at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007. Ashley has worked with children and adolescents, women with eating disorders at the, children and teens with serious medical illnesses and children who have been the victims of abuse and trauma. Her master's thesis studied women and non suicidal self injury. She currently works with children adolescents and adults in a psychiatric inpatient and partial hospitalization program at Riveredge Hospital.

Bi-Polar Disorder in Children and Adolescents

Presenter: Dr. Amer Smajkic
Dr. Smajkic is a board certified child and adolescent psychiatrist. He is the clinical director of our adolescent male unit as well as a clinical director at Rush University Medical Center Department of Psychiatry. In addition to inpatient work, Dr. Smajkic also provides outpatient services and has done extensive work with Bosnian refugees and trauma.

The Jason Foundation

The Jason Foundation is a not for profit, nationally recognized youth suicide prevention and awareness program. Psychiatric Solutions Inc is the clinical affiliate for JFI and Ginny Trainor is the Jason Foundation representative for Riveredge Hospital. HB 4672, or The Jason Flatt Act, has been passed in the house and senate and is scheduled to be signed into law by the Governor in June, 2010. This bill requires all school personnel in grades 7-12 to receive 2 hours of suicide awareness education every school year. This 2 hour program is relevant to anyone working with youth including police officers, teachers, social workers, case managers, nurses, counselors, etc.

Presenter: Clark Flatt
Clark Flatt is the founder and CEO/President of The Jason Foundation. In response to losing his son Jason to suicide, Clark started The Jason Foundation with the mission to prevent the "Silent Epidemic" of youth suicide through educational and awareness programs to equip young people, educators / youth workers and parents with the tools and resources to help identify and assist at-risk youth. The Jason Foundation has reached millions of people through these educational curriculums. We are pleased and honored to have Clark Flatt present at our Resource Fair this year!
